small works, Big Ideas, is the 2023 juried exhibition at the Clay Studio of Missoula. This exhibition focuses on creations that may be diminutive in size, but have a commanding presence due to the concepts explored and/or technical execution. Fifty-two works by 37 artists were selected from entries throughout North America.

This year’s exhibit was juried by Richard Notkin, an internationally recognized artist living in Vaughn, Washington. Richard has created ceramic sculptures and teapots laden with social and political commentary for more than five decades. His art is in more than 70 museum collections throughout America, Europe and Asia. Among his awards are three Individual Artist Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, and grants from the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, Tiffany Foundation, and the Hoi Fellowship from United States Artists. Notkin is a Fellow of the American Craft Council, received the Honorary Membership Award from NCECA, and Meloy Stevenson Award from the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts.
