Seattle native Jan Koutsky finds inspiration in the deep traditions of abstract expressionism and in the natural world around us. "My images play between abstract and recognizable imagery. My hope is for the viewer to finish the piece in their own mind - giving just enough information to send them on their way - but at the same time, not being too directive."
Jan builds rich layers of colored pencil on paper, working in a gradual process to create subtle shitfts in tone, giving a sense of space, depth and textural interest.
Jan Koutsky is an award winning author, has spent 38 years teaching in an Art department at a Seattle college, and has numerous years of exhibition experience. She now concentrates full time on her studio practice.
