Lois James

Growing up in Michigan, I have always lived near water.  It is such a part of me, I cannot imagine being unable to observe its colors, movement, reflections, life and beauty. It is no coincidence that the artform I love requires water for its birth. Much of my work reflects the colors of the storms and the calm, placid days that we see in the Northwest.

I love working with and making handmade paper and my artwork is created with my own handmade paper.  Pulp painting makes the fine lines and patterns. My work includes both 2-dimensional wall pieces and little 3-dimensional paper houses. My pieces often relate to the house as a refuge for both people and other creatures. “High Tide” is a little house recalling floods and one way to deal with high water.
